Surgical Orthodontics

Orthognathic surgery is a combined orthodontic and surgical treatment approach to the correction of severe dental and jaw abnormalities. These are done in patients whose facial bones are no longer growing.

Following are some of the conditions that may indicate the need for corrective jaw surgery:

  • Difficulty chewing, or biting food
  • Excessive wear of the back teeth
  • Severe open bite, deep bite or dental crossbite
  • Unbalanced facial appearance from the front, or side
  • Facial injury
  • Receding lower jaw and chin
  • Protruding jaw
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

This is a complex multi- disciplinary treatment involving the oral maxillofacial surgeon. An orthodontic assessment is needed to determine whether you are a candidate for corrective jaw, or orthognathic surgery.
